More about Army ROTC at the University of South Carolina

In addition to classroom training, Army ROTC also offers extraciricular training and competition through the Ranger Challenge Program. Ranger Challenge is an annual event that is held on a regional basis. The event occurs during a weekend in October and tests schools with ROTC programs by having the cadet teams compete for high scores in several events. These events include weapon assembly and disassembly, a grenade course, building a rope bridge, a physical fitness test, a land navigation and map reading test and an eight kilometer road march. Cadets in Ranger Challenge meet for PT each weekday at 0600 and also train on each Saturday prior to the event. During the spring semester Ranger Club is held where cadets receive additional training and are prepared for Ranger Challenge in the fall. Both Ranger Challenge and Ranger Club are optional with voluntary participation highly encouraged.

During the fall semester cadets also carry out the United States, South Carolina and Army flags during USC football games. Participation in this color guard is optional. Army ROTC cadets also march annually in the Veterans Day Parade unless a cadet has a class conflict.

At the end of each year the Gamecock Batallion hosts either a dining-in or a dining-out event at the Fort Jackson officers club.
